As I brainstorm cocktail ideas for this Fourth of July weekend, I find myself wondering if the red sangria mason jar will really be healthier than the patriotic vodka-cran concoction…
How healthy is red wine actually? We’ve all heard it time and time again: Red wine is “good for you,” and it’s “beneficial for your heart.” But I just still can’t bring myself to fully believe the rumors. So I did the research and I’m here to set the record straight! Here are the deets on the health benefits of red wine.
This could be the miracle worker we owe it all to! Red wine contains many brilliant antioxidants called polyphenols. Polyphenols may have a positive effect on your heart, as they are believed to protect the lining of its surrounding blood vessels. Resveratrol is one polyphenol that has been studied extensively as a possible preventer of blood clots and a reducer of cholesterol.
However, many of the studies done regarding the effects of resveratrol on the heart have been conducted on only animals, not humans. So, although the results are not 100% confirmed on humans, the antioxidant itself has consistently proven to reduce inflammation and blood clots, while protecting the blood vessels surrounding the heart!
Is red really healthier than white?
YES! The resveratrol comes from the skin of the grapes that are used to make the vino. Of course all wines are made with scrumptious grapes, but red wine is fermented with the grape skin longer than white wine. Therefore, red wine is simply packed with more of the heart-healthy antioxidants.
A study published in the Royal Society’s of Chemistry’s Food and Function in 2014 found that the more resveratrol in wine, the more it protects the body against colon cancer. Another study done by Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine points out that resveratrol may also prevent memory loss that comes with age.
While more studies continue to be conducted on humans, the topic of red wine’s health benefits remains hot. The bottom line is red wine is healthy- in moderation! One glass a day for women and two glasses for men is the recommended serving.
Oh yeah and for anyone else that loves their vino as much as me, let me remind you that 1 glass= 5 oz of wine! 😉
Drink up fellow winos!
